A coalition committed to improving workplace health and wellbeing in Wales.

Last month saw the launch of the Wales Health at Work Partnership. The Partnership aims to improve workplace health and wellbeing in Wales, which is seen as critical to improving wider public health across the country. Tackling wellbeing, mental health and musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) is key to this, as they represent some of the most significant health issues for the workforce in Wales.

The Partnership is a coalition between Welsh Government, Public Health Wales, Business Wales, Director of Public Protection – Wales Representative, Health & Safety Executive, Federation of Small Businesses – Wales, Local Authority Health & Safety Expert Panel, Wales TUC and Welsh Local Government Association. They will work across all business sizes and sectors, with the aim of greater engagement among SMEs and Micro businesses.

What is the Wales Health at Work Partnership aiming to do?

The WHWP outlined their objectives to support businesses in Wales by:

  • Promoting new and existing initiatives in Wales to improve health at work and mental wellbeing.
  • Sharing approaches, tools, and workplace experience for managing the risk, and reducing the incidence, of the major causes of occupational ill health in Wales.
  • Gathering and acting on information regarding additional health support needed by Wales’ working population.
  • Developing a co-ordinated and sustainable approach to underpin the work of the Partnership.

What’s been the reaction?

Speaking at the launch the deputy director of the Health and Work Programme at the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Peter Brown said:

“Health is a complex area and, as we all know, health improvements are not delivered in one day. That’s as true for HSE’s own role, preventing work-related ill health, as for any other, and makes partnership working all the more important. HSE is therefore delighted to be a part of today’s launch.”

Katie Hughes, Director of Sure Safety Consultancy, applauded the launch saying:

“It’s exciting to see a collaboration of these key organisations to promote health and wellbeing in Wales. Setting out their agenda to focus on the issues that affect the Welsh workforce, such as wellbeing, mental health and musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) is imperative to keeping our employees safe and happy at work. I’m excited to see how their agenda moves forward, especially with their focus on SMEs and Micro businesses, who may feel left behind or unable to access this type of support.”
